• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, named Cyclone Murasu, within the next 24 hours. The system, which developed from a well-marked low-pressure area, was located over the southeast Bay and adjoining areas of the Andaman Sea as of 11:30 AM IST on 31 October
• The cyclone is expected to approach the Andhra Pradesh coast by 2 November, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds of up to 100 kmph. Several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Nilgiris, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, and Villupuram, are forecast to experience heavy rainfall over the next few days.

Impact & Risks

The intensifying weather system poses a significant risk to coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall and strong winds could lead to localised flooding, waterlogging, and potential damage to infrastructure, particularly in vulnerable areas. Coastal districts such as Cuddalore and Villupuram are expected to experience heavy rainfall on consecutive days, increasing the risk of disruption to daily life and transportation. Residents in these areas, as well as those in the Nilgiris and Tiruvallur districts, should remain vigilant and prepared for adverse weather conditions.
